Bergamot (Citrus Bergamia)

The essential oil is extracted by cold pressing the skin of the fruit.  It is a green liquid with a fresh, lively,  fruity and warm fragrance.

One of the most common applications that you may not be aware of is its use in black tea. The inclusion of bergamot essential oil in regular black tea is then given a different name – Earl Grey!

It’s physical  beneficial effects are antiseptic and antibacterial. They inhibit the growth of germs, virus and fungi.

Bergamot essential oil activates and increases secretions of the digestive acids, enzymes and bile and facilitates digestion.

It is extensively  used  in cosmetics and skin care products such as  soaps, creams, and lotions due to it’s cicatrisant properties. Cicatrisant means a property or an agent which helps scars and other marks on the skin to disappear. It makes the distribution of pigments and melanin even and uniform, resulting in the fading away of marks and an even, attractive skin tone. This essential oil is commonly used to eliminate the effects of acne, which can leave unsightly scars and marks on the affected areas for many years.

Bergamot essential oil is a wonderful deodorant. It’s refreshing aroma and disinfectant properties, which inhibit growth of germs causing body-odor, make it very effective.  Citrus smells are very powerful, and can overcome or eliminate many other odors that people smell in a certain area, which is why bergamot oil is also used in room fresheners and sprays.

Bergamot essential oil  is antiparasitic, it kills intestinal worms.

It helps to relieve depression and anxiety, nervous tension and frustration. Bergamot essential oil soothes nerves and relaxes muscles. It can help cure or treat ailments associated with stress such as sleeplessness, high blood pressure and insomnia.

It lowers body temperature and reduces fever.

Caution:   Bergamot oil is photosensitizing, meaning that if applied to the skin at certain concentrations, burning can occur if the skin is also exposed to ultraviolet light. This warning applies to “leave-on” preparations such as oils, lotions and balms. There is no risk from “wash-off” products, such as soaps, shampoos and bubble baths.
