Description
Patchouli is a bushy herb of the mint family, with erect stems, reaching two or three feet in height and bearing small, pale pink-white flowers. The plant is native to tropical regions of Asia, and is now extensively cultivated.
Patchouli’s essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the leaves, requiring rupture of its cell walls by steam scalding, light fermentation or drying. The leaves must be fermented and aged before being distilled. One of the most notable characteristics of this essential oil is that it actually improves over time. As it ages, it develops its distinctive scent. It has long been used to keep moths and other insects out of linens and woolen shawls and rugs. It is the characteristic scent found in Indian bedspreads and cottons. Hand-woven silk and wool rugs from Persia, India, and Turkey had dried patchouli leaves laid on them before they were rolled for shipping.
It is a digestive tonic and increases your ability to decompose food and absorb nutrients.
It may curb an overactive appetite for unhealthy foods.
